Rivendell Herb Farm

More than just herbs!

RIVENDELL GARDENS

The Garden

"Bilbo would never leave here!"

Twelve years ago, we planted the first herbs on our property. In those days, we were not living at Rivendell full-time and any plant in the ground had to survive by its wits and tenacity. Watering, pruning, or mulching were just not things that happened on a regular basis. We were impressed by the fact that these perennials kept coming up every spring, eager for another year of neglect. It was about that time the idea of operating a herb farm was born. (Low maintenance, we thought!)

We now live at Rivendell year-round and continue to develop our herb gardens for your enjoyment. At present, our themed beds include: our oldest, the Thyme garden, with over 14 varieties of thyme, as well as: Mint, Culinary, Cat, Medicinal, Fragrant, Tea, Body-Care, Dyeing, and Liqueur. Future plans include adding Shakespeare, Wormwood, Edible Flower and Bee & Butterfly gardens.

Most of the plants in the Culinary garden are used daily in the Rivendell Tea Room Café. These include herbs frequently used in cooking such as rosemary, parsley, thyme and varieties of basil. Some not-so-usual culinary herbs you will find in our garden and on your plate are salad burnet, jerusalem artichoke, stevia, and dandelion. Edible flowers are an important part of our Tea Room Café cuisine - discover the delicate flavours of lavender, borage, bergamot, viola, nasturtium and yucca.

Join us for a conducted herb walk through the gardens or feel free to explore our property on your own. Our large pond attracts deer, rabbits, frogs (yes, we have plenty of bull-frogs and spring-peepers), turtles, ducks, blue heron and other wildlife. You never know what you might see while at Rivendell.
